Resident

The term “resident” comes from Latin and means “to settle.” Resident bacteria are microorganisms that have firmly established themselves in the microbiome over a long period. They have “settled” in the gut and remain there.

Transient Bacteria

Transient (from Latin transire = to pass by) bacterial strains, on the other hand, are organisms that do not settle in the microbiome. They are “passing through” and are simply expelled by the body.

However, it is important to note: Probiotics do not need to colonize the gut to be effective!

Scientists have found that probiotics exert their effects mainly as transient bacteria. They travel through the digestive tract and interact along the way with your immune cells, gut cells, nutrients, and existing bacteria to achieve direct and indirect benefits. Some improve gene expression related to the signaling of tight junctions, which help protect against gut permeability—meaning a tight gut barrier. The gut barrier determines which substances from the digestive tract can pass through the gut wall into the body. A healthy gut barrier acts as a protective shield, making it harder for harmful substances and bacteria to penetrate the gut wall and enter the body—this, in turn, has a positive effect on your immune system.

Other transient bacteria promote the release of neurotransmitters that stimulate muscle contractions for increased motility, leading to better and more regular bowel movements. When the gut moves regularly, food can be transported more efficiently, helping to prevent conditions like constipation. Additionally, some bacteria produce byproducts such as short-chain fatty acids, which are beneficial for metabolic and gut health.

Continuous Intake

Since transient bacteria are expelled at the end of their journey through our gut, continuous intake is important. That’s why probiotics only deliver their best health benefits through regular use.
