Resident
The term “resident” comes from Latin and means “to settle.” Resident bacteria are microorganisms that have firmly established themselves in the microbiome over a long period. They have “settled” in the gut and remain there.
Transient Bacteria
Transient (from Latin transire = to pass by) bacterial strains, on the other hand, are organisms that do not settle in the microbiome. They are “passing through” and are simply expelled by the body.

Scientists have found that probiotics exert their effects mainly as transient bacteria. Other transient bacteria promote the release of neurotransmitters that stimulate muscle contractions for increased motility, leading to better and more regular bowel movements. When the gut moves regularly, food can be transported more efficiently, helping to prevent conditions like constipation. Additionally, some bacteria produce byproducts such as short-chain fatty acids, which are beneficial for metabolic and gut health.
