Initial aggravation when taking probiotics: What you should know

Do you feel unwell after taking probiotics? In rare cases, taking probiotics can cause an initial worsening. However, this is not a bad thing. In an initial worsening, existing symptoms become more severe for a short time or new symptoms appear before the health condition improves. The reason for an initial worsening is often that the body's own detoxification is promoted and large amounts of metabolic waste products are produced. This puts a strain on the organism and leads to an initial worsening.
In the following article, you will learn more about the initial exacerbation and its symptoms, its context with the skin, how long it might last, and how to prevent an initial exacerbation with probiotics.

Symptoms of a probiotic initial worsening

Symptoms that may occur during initial aggravation with probiotics include:

  • flatulence
  • Diarrhea
  • constipation

However, after a few days or weeks, these symptoms should subside and disappear. It is important that you observe the symptoms closely and pay attention to whether there are any external factors that play a role in the discomfort.
For example, we recommend keeping a symptom diary and writing down exactly what new symptoms have arisen since taking the probiotics.  This allows you to see over a longer period of time how the symptoms behave, what triggers them and whether they improve.
Initial worsening in the context of the skin
The skin is often a point where an initial worsening may be visible when taking probiotics. You may have heard that the skin is the mirror of the intestine. That's the case here too! If an initial worsening occurs, it may be that your skin reflects this.

Duration of a probiotic initial worsening

The symptoms usually last no longer than a few days or weeks. After that, they should subside. The intestinal flora has been regulated by the probiotic strains and the desired balance of the various bacterial strains within the intestinal flora now prevails.
If symptoms persist for more than two weeks, we recommend reducing the dose. If you tolerate the small dose well, you can gradually increase the dose back to the recommended dosage. Simply open the capsule and add half to a glass of water and drink it quickly.
If symptoms persist after weeks and after reducing the dose, this is no longer an initial worsening but an intolerance to the product taken. We recommend that you stop taking the product.

Quality differences in probiotics

It is important to be aware that when talking about probiotics, not every probiotic is the same. Each manufacturer brings their own formula to market with certain different strains of bacteria. Each strain of bacteria has its own individual properties and effects, and when combined with other strains of bacteria, new properties are created. This means that every probiotic product is different.
Dailybacs uses 11 bacterial strains with a total of 60 billion CFUs (=colony forming units). In addition, our products are produced in the EU.A particular advantage is that we explicitly name all bacterial strains, and not just the genus, thus ensuring total transparency about what is contained in our products.
